Dehradoon/ June 17
As many as 30 people have been killed and more than 50 went missing due to flash floods triggered due to heavy rains in Uttarakhand Monday. As per reports around 50 persons have gone missing in cloud burst in Rambada.
Rudraprayag and Uttarkashi are the worst affected areas where the river Mandakini is in spate and the water of the river entered the market area in Rambada.
Due to the heavy rains, the Char Dham Yatra has been halted and more than 50 thousands of pilgrims are stranded enroute to Badrinath, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Yamunotri, including star cricketer Harbhajan Singh.
Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has been pressed into service to rescue and evacuate people from Kedarnath and Gaurikund, an official said. The Police have also blocked the traffic by placing barriers at Rishikesh to prevent any further movement of pilgrims on their onward journey to Char Dham.
Both Mandakini and Alaknanda, major tributaries of the Ganga, are flowing over the danger mark and the bridge connecting Rudraprayag and Gaurikund has been damaged leading to its closure, disaster management officer Meera Kenthura said. Kedarnath yatra has been suspended in view of bad weather, the officer said.
