Indian govt to launch SMS service to provide info on farming

Indian government will launch a SMS portal to provide farmers information regarding various aspects of farming.
The SMS portal Kisaan Portal will be launched by the President Pranab Mukherjee on July 16 and it aim to provide advisories and alerts on farming to more than 12 crore farmers across the country.
“The portal will enable farmers to take informed decisions relating to different aspects of farming including crop production and marketing, animal husbandry, dairy and fisheries,” said an Indian government spokesperson, adding that farmers can also opt for customized SMSs as per their requirements.
Interested farmers can register for SMS service by calling Kisaan Call Centre on the toll free number 1800-180-1551 or through the web portal and they will be provided information regarding weather forecast, pest attacks, soil testing results, market information, crop variety, dairy and fishery by officials/experts/scientists of various departments in English, Hindi and vernacular languages.
“This topical and seasonal advisories regarding farming issues will help farmers in planning farming operations effectively and taking the best suited action to deal with adverse situations,” added the spokesperson.
