President Pranab Mukherjee signs anti-rape ordinace

President Pranab Mukherjee today signed the anti-rape law ordinance to put a check on crime against women.

The President today gave his assent to the Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance 2013, a statement issued by Union Home Ministry said. The ordinance, which is based on the recommendations of the Justice JS Verma Committee, was cleared by Union Cabinet in a meeting yesterday. The Union Cabinet had proposed for death sentence in those cases where rape leads to death of the victim or leaves her in vegetative state while the Verma Committee had only proposed life sentence to the accused.

As per the ordinance, the minimum punishment for rape cases will be 20 years in jail which can be extended to life tem in jail till the natural life of the convict or death. After the Delhi gang-rape incident, there were protests across the country and there were demands for death penalty, however, the Verma committee hasn’t proposed it in its report. Meanwhile, various women’s groups had opposed the ordinance, by saying that it lacked teeth to prevent sexual crimes against women and had urged the President not to sign it.
