Assistant engineer arrested for demanding bribe from Sarpanch

Panchayats department’s assistant engineer was on Saturday arrested by Punjab vigilance bureau for allegedly demanding bribe from village sarpanch for issuing utilization certificate.
The Chief Director-cum-DGP of Punjab Vigilance Bureau Sursh Arora said that Pawan Kumar, who was posted at Budhlada block of Mansa district as assistant engineer, was arrested while accepting a Rs 10,000 from the sarpanch of Kulrian village of the area.
“We have received a complaint from sarpanch Ranjit Singh that Pawan was demanding a bribe of Rs 10,000 from him for issuing utilization certificate regarding development grant issued to gram panchayats,” Arora said.
After conducting investigations into the complaint of alleged demand of bribe, vigilance bureau laid a trap and caught Kumar red handed while accepting bribe from sarpanch, Arora said, adding that a case under sections 7, 13 (1) read with 13 (2) of Prevention of Corruption Act 1988 has been registered against the accused and further investigation in the matter are on.
