5000 trucks to be mobilised for the transportation of apple crop: Malhotra

Deputy Commissioner Shimla Dinesh Malhotra in a meeting with apple growers, transporters and officers of different departments on Monday, reviewed arrangements for transportation, regulation of traffic, improvement of roads for the ensuing apple season.
Deputy Commissioner said that estimated apple crop this year was around 2.5crore apple boxes where as it was around 1.29crore last year.
“To carry the apple crop to various markets the administration has started contacting truck unions in Himachal and other states. As many as 5000 trucks will be mobilised during the season to carry the crop to different locations in the country,” he added.
He informed that in addition small utility vehicles will also be arranged for transportation of apples.
“Freight charges will be fixed and enforced properly. Global positioning System will also be used by police and district administration to monitor movement of trucks engaged for transportation of apples. All SDMs have been asked to ensure registration of all forwarding agents during apple season,” he informed.

President Shimla truck union Balbir Banshtu requested for proper record of commission agents especially those who come from outside the state to buy crop in Himachal. Deputy Commissioner directed Secretary marketing to ensure record of these commission agents.
Apple grower Pratap Chauhan, Dinesh Justa and others raised matter of maintenance of roads in apple growing areas. Public Works Department official informed that the improvement work as well as maintenance of roads was in progress.
Malhotra said PWD will position adequate number of earth moving machinery and crane in bottleneck areas to ensure smooth traffic during this time. Managing Director Him Federation Rakesh Sharma assured that carton boxes for the packing of apples will be made available well in time.
