Assam: Army jawan accused of rape commits suicide

An Army jawan, who is accused of raping a woman and two girls on April 6, on Tuesday allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with service rifle in Karbi Anglong district on Assam.

As per reports, the Army jawan identified as Satyabir Dara shot himself with his rifle after which he was rushed to hospital where he was declared brought dead.

A native of Haryana, Satyabir Dara was serving in 8 Jat Regiment of Indian Army was allegedly the prime accused in rape case and he was likely to be arrested by the police in the case today.

It is pertinent to mention here that a case was filed on April 8 at Dokmoka police station that some Army jawans had allegedly raped a woman and two girls.

The rape case had allegedly took place when Army jawans of 8 Jat Regiment had gone for search operation in Parkopahar area of Karbi Anglong district on April 6.

The rape case had led to widespread protests in Assam in which 11 persons including nine security personnel had suffered injuries in the stone pelting by the protestors, leading to firing by police personnel.

Police parties of Assam had also expressed resentment over the incident and had submitted a memorandum to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh through District Commissioner, seeking withdrawal of armed forces from Assam.
