Zanskar frozen river trekking: Chadar Trek closed for tourists

The world famous Zanskar frozen river trekking, Chadar Trek has been closed for tourists due to landslide near Shaday Sumdo that has blocked Phuktal River, resulting in formation of lake.

As per reports, an aerial survey was conducted by executive Councilor for Zanskar Affairs, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil (Ladakh), Skalzang Wangail Gara along with SDM Zanskar after which the decision to close Chadar Trek for tourists.

Wangail Gara said that a landslide at a distance of 5.5 Km from Shaday Sumdo, below Murshu had blocked the river.

“As a result, a 5km long lake has been formed towards Shun since the landslide on December 31, 2014 after which the movement of locals as well as tourists from Chadar Trek has been closed,” he said.

Authorities said that the blockage could break anytime causing danger to people residing in low-lying areas of Zanskar, Leh and Kargil alongside Zanskar and Indus River.
