US military would shut down over 15 bases in Europe including three airbases located in Britain, in a move that is likely to save 500 million dollars.

US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel confirmed the move and said that RAF Lakenheath would be the first permanent European base for F-35 aircraft.

US has presently 60,000 troops stationed in Europe mainly in Germany, Italy and UK, however, US authorities said that number of troops would remain the same but these would be kept on rotation basis training programs.
