Oxford Dictionary accepts Keema, Papad, 240 other Indian words

Oxford Dictionary has included Keema, Papad along with other 240 Indian words in its latest edition, owing to the popularity of these words across the globe.

As per reports, Oxford Dictionary has included over 240 words in the ninth edition of Oxford Advanced Leaner’s Dictionary.

Most of the new words included in Oxford Dictionary are the words commonly used in Indian Kitchens like Keema, Papad, Curry leaf etc due to the popularity of Indian food worldwide.

ELT Dictionaries and Reference Grammar at Oxford University Press Patrick reportedly said that the new inclusions have been in the Oxford dictionary on the basis of the popular words used across the globe.

Patrick said that most of the newly included Indian English words are from Hindi and they have been included on the basis of their usage. “These Indian English words have also assessed by experts from across the globe after determining the frequency of their usage,” Patrick said.

It is pertinent to mention here that Oxford Dictionary had included over 900 to 1,000 words over the years and it is for the first Indian words have been included in the dictionary in such a huge number.

The ninth edition of Oxford Advanced Leaner’s Dictionary reportedly included over 900 words from across the world and around 20 percent words have been selected from online and social media networking sites.
