Sangita Awhale of Saikheda village in Maharashtra’s Washim district was on Thursday honoured by Rural Development minister Pankaja Munde for selling her ‘mangalsutra’ to build a toilet.
Munde lauded Sangita Awhale’s effort for taking forward the sanitation drive
that was started by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
She also gifted her a new ‘mangalsutra’ as token of appreciation for her initiative.
Talking to mediapersons after receiving the honour from Munde, Sangita said that sanitation was a basic necessity as compared to ornaments.
“Hence, I decided to sell all my ornaments and build a toilet at my house,” Sangita added.
Maharashtra’s Rural Development minister also vowed to build maximum number of toilets in the state so that women don’t have to face any inconvenience.
