Hisar unrest: Godman Rampal arrested from Satlok Ashram

Haryana police on Wednesday night arrested self proclaimed godman Rampal from his Satlok Ashram in Barwala in Hisar district.

Sant Rampal’s arrest came nearly 48 hours after Haryana police started struggle with his supporters in which 6 persons including two women and a children have reportedly been killed

. However, the reason for their death could not be ascertained as yet.

Reports say that Sant Rampal was taken to hospital in an ambulance after which he would taken to Chandigarh.

Haryana police, during the day, had discovered five bodies from Satlok ashram where reportedly thousands of people have been holed up for days. Many people, however, claimed that they were held hostage by the Sant Rampal’s supporters.

Police have evacuated around 10,000 people from the ashram that was heavily guarded. “We could not launch a full scale assault on the ashram as women and children were being as human shields,” police officials said.

Meanwhile, the police have now arrested around 20 key functionaries and 250 members of Rampal’s supporters and have imposed new charges including that rioting.

63-year-old Rampal, a former engineer who says he’s a devotee of Sufi Saint Kabir has been on charges of sedition.

The deceased have been identified as Savita (31) from Delhi, Santosh (45) from Rohtak, Raj Bala (70) from Bijnore, Malikit Kaur (50) from Sangrur and Rajni (20). An 18-month-old child has also died in the incident, reportedly of natural causes.

Many people including police personnel had suffered injuries in the clash that took place yesterday and some of them are said to be serious condition.

The entire drama over Sant Rampal’s arrest started 14 days ago when he failed to appear before Punjab and Haryana High Court after which the court issued non-bailable warrant against him.
