A 72 kg rare turtle, estimated to be more than 200 years old, was rescued from Rajindra Lake in Punjab’s Patiala’s district and it has been shifted to Chattbir Zoo for observation.
As per Wildlife Experts, such rare soft-shelled fresh water turtle were earlier found in Indus valley and these have been declared vulnerable species under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act.
As per reports, the turtle was noticed by labourers working nearby, in the Rajindra after which authorities were informed. The lake has been lying partly dry for the past two decades due to lack to proper care.
Punjab’s Wildlife department would conduct DNA test on turtle to ascertain its age and species as the physical features of the turtle suggests that it belonged to rare species of turtles found in India.
