23 persons were killed while 20 other suffered injuries after a private bus skidded off the road and fell into Baspa River near Ruturang in Sangla area of Himachal’s Kinnaur district while the bus was on its way to Sangla from Kalpa area.
Police said that the bodies of 23 persons have been retrieved from the river and would be handed over to their relatives after autopsy. “While the 17 injured persons have airlifted to IGMC Shimla where they are undergoing treatment and the condition of the four persons is said to be serious,” said the police.
Police said that private bus rolled down the hill into Baspa River, a tributary of Satluj, making it difficult for the Police to extricate bodies from mangled remains of the bus. Some eyewitnesses said the condition of the road where the accident occurred was bad due to recent rains. The driver and conductor of the bus were among the dead.
Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh and former Chief Minister, Prem Kumar Dhumal expressed shock and grief over the accident. The Chief Minister directed the district administration to take all possible measures to rescue the victims and provide them adequate relief.
Transport Minister G S Bali ordered inquiry into the Kinnaur bus mishap and said that the Joint Commissioner, Transport will conduct the inquiry to ascertain the cause of accident.
