Punjab extends bans on gutkha, pan masala for one more year

Punjab government on Wednesday decided to extend ban on tobacco products as gutkha and pan masala for one more year in the state.
A Punjab government spokesperson said that Punjab’s Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had decided to extend ban on these products for one more year today.
“Badal has approved the proposal of Punjab’s Health and Family Welfare department for banning the Gutkha and Pan Masala for one more year in the larger interest of public health,” said the Punjab government spokesperson, adding that any other food products containing Tobacco or Nicotine as ingredients by whatsoever name available in the market had also been banned.
The spokesperson added that the ban has been imposed on these products as chewing of gutkha, pan masala and other tobacco products is a potent health hazard and responsible for deadly disease of cancer especially of mouth and throat.
“Earlier, Punjab Government had issued notification in this regard on September 5, 2012 and was to end on September 9, 2013,” he added.
