IOC to vote to decide fate of wrestling in Olympic Games

International Olympic Committee’s executive board on Thursday decided to conduct voting in September this year to decide the fate of wrestling along with squash and baseball/softball in the Games.
India Youth Affairs and Sports ministry in a statement said that ‘the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has included Wrestling in a short list of three Olympic sports to be voted on in September 2013 by the wider membership.
“The International Olympic Committee’s executive board placed wrestling, squash and baseball/softball on a short list of sports from which only one will be chosen for inclusion in the 2020 Games,” the Sports ministry statement reads.
Indian Sports ministry further said that they are hopeful that wrestling will return to the Olympic Roster after the September meeting of the IOC as wrestling has huge fan following and 71 countries participated in the Wrestling event in London Olympics to full houses.
Earlier, Youth Affairs and Sports minister Jitendra Singh discussed the issue of restoring wrestling in the Olympic movement with IOC on May 15 2013 at Lausanne in Switzerland and had written a letter in February to IOC President Jacques Rogge to include the game in Olympic roster owing to immense popularity and fan-following worldwide.
