Punjab State Election Commission (SEC) on Friday issued notification for elections in 145 Panchayat Smitis and 22 Zila Parishads in the state and candidates can file their nominations till May 7. A Model Code of Conduct has been put into force in Punjab which will continue till May 23
“Secrutiny of the papers will be done on May 8 and papers could be withdrawn up to May 9. Voting will be conducted on May 19 and counting of votes would be done on May 21 results would be announced on the same day. Election process would be completed on May 23,” said a SEC spokesperson.
The SEC has also issued strict directions for the compliance of model code of conduct and has also written a letter to the Chief Secretary for ensuring the compliance of conduct.
“During the election process Ministers shall not combine their official visit with electioneering work and shall not make use of official machinery and personnel or other Government resources including government vehicle for furtherance of interests of any candidate. Official telephones including mobiles, fax etc shall not be used for electioneering purposes,” said the SEC spokesperson, adding that the Ministers and other authorities shall not sanction grants/payment out of their discretionary funds from the time elections are announced by the Commission.
