Bangladesh Parliament elects country’s first female speaker

Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury of ruling Awami League Party was on Tuesday became first woman speaker of Bangladesh Parliament after being elected unanimously.
47-year-old professional lawyer Sharmin replaced Abdul Hamid who was elected as Bangladesh’s President last week after the death of Md Zillur Rahman. Sharmin is also the youngest speaker in the history of Bangladesh parliamentary democracy.
It is a unique moment in the history of Indian Continent that all the three speakers in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are women and in Bangladesh, the position of Prime Minister, Leader of Opposition, Deputy Leader of Parliament and now, Speaker are being held by women.
