6546 candidates in fray for Punjab panchayat elections

259 candidates elected unopposed for Zila parishad and panchayat samiti elections scheduled to take place on May 19

After the scrutiny of nomination papers and withdrawal of nominations by the candidates, 6546 candidates are in fray for Zila parishad and panchayat samiti election, scheduled to take place on May 19 while 229 candidates were elected unopposed.
Punjab State Election Commission (SEC) said here today that 1321 candidates had filed nomination papers for Zila parisad elections out of which 127 nomination papers has been rejected while 404 candidates had withdrawn their nomination papers. Meanwhile, 30 candidates have been elected unopposed after which only 760 candidates have remained in fray from zila parishad elections.
“For the Panchayat Samiti elections, 351 nomination papers have been rejected out of the total 10085 and 3719 candidates had withdrawn their nomination papers. Now only 5786 candidates have remained in fray as 229 candidates were elected unopposed,” said the SEC spokesperson, adding that election symbols have also been allotted to the candidates.
