Congress stages walkout on first day of HP assembly session over corruption

Shimla/ August 27

The opposition Congress staged walkout on the first day of assembly session over the issue of corruption. It also demanded an independent probe into the ‘chargesheet’ submitted by the party against the ruling BJP government.  Immediately after the obituary references, Leader of Opposition Vidya Stokes demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the charges. Congress members also raised slogan. While the ruling BJP accused the Congress of running away from the debate by making such hue and cry.

Condemning the walkout, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ravinder Ravi said the opposition was a divided house and had no common man’s issue to pin down the government.

The Congress gave a “chargesheet” to President Pranab Mukherjee Aug 22 against the government in the hill state and demanded an inquiry against it. Asserting that the BJP was ready to discuss any issue, Ravi asked the Congress leaders to give proper notice for discussing the issue and added that the Charge-sheet submitted by the Congress had no substance.

The state government on Monday also introduced a bill to amend the land ceiling law to allow religious organisations to buy land in excess of the upper limit.  The amendment would benefit various religious sects, which had purchased prime land across the state. BJP government’s move is being viewed as an attempt to appease to religious organisations that has a huge following ahead of the assembly polls.
