Ultimately the nod of college principals has cleared the way to indirect polls for student body in Himachal Pradesh University. In a meeting held here on Tuesday with vice chancellor A.D.N Bajpai the college principals affiliated to the HPU have endorsed not to conduct the Students Central Association (SCA) Elections in the present form.
College principals were of the view that in the present from of elections was leading to violence which was disturbing academic activities in the colleges. This meeting was attended by about more than one hundred College Principals.
“After receiving suggestions from the college principals we are contemplating to hold student polls on different pattern which are suggested by the Lyngdoh Committee. We are studying the formats of these elections” Vice Chancellor HPU A.D.N Bajapi said.
He said that after deciding the suitable format of election for HPU, this item would be placed before the Executive Council for its final nod. But simultaneously the opinion from the state government would also be taken, he added.
It is worth mentioning that varsity authorities were considering to ban SCA elections as the issue is in spotlight after High Court also showing serious concern on the issue of violence. But simultaneously they are finding it difficult to go ahead in this direction due to strong resistance from different student organizations.
According to experts if the varsity authorities conduct indirect elections to SCA, it will not be the violation of recommendations of Lyngdoh Committee which was constituted by the ministry of Human Resource Development as per directions of Supreme Court of India to frame the guidelines on student unions elections in the colleges and universities.
As per recommendations of the committee, the indirect elections are permitted in the institutions which are running professional courses. This committee had suggested three models for the universities to hold student’s body elections. Many of the universities of various states are already holding indirect elections for the students’ body.
