The death toll in the bus mishap in Kangra district has risen to eight on Sunday, with four more Amarnath Pilgrims succumbing to injuries while on their way to hospital.The four injured were declared brought dead by the doctors at the Government Medical College Hospital in Tanda , Deputy Commissioner KR Bharti said.All the eight deceased hailed from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, he said.
The bodies were sent for post-mortem and the victims’ relatives were informed about the incident, Bharti said, adding that all other injured were out of danger.
The accident occurred on Saturday night when the private bus carrying 48 Amarnath pilgrims plunged into a 250m deep gorge near Kangra tunnel, 22-km from Dharamsala, while returning to Delhi. The accident took place near Brajeshwari ghat near Kangra fort on the outskirts of Kangra town, around 10 p.m. Saturday.
They were travelling from Chamunda Devi temple to Jwalaji temple when the accident occurred. Eye witnesses told police that the bus driver probably lost control over the vehicle when it was descending a steep gradient. “After hitting a mountain, the bus rolled down the gorge,” a police official said.
The administration had a tough time in extrication the victims from the bus as rain hampred the recue operation.
