Shimla/June 13

Ten students were injured today in a clash on the Himachal Pradesh University campus when activists of the SFI and the ABVP pelted stones on each other forcing the administration the close the boys hostels for an indefinite period. The police have arrested eight students belonging to both outfits.

According to sources, the trouble started during night over some minor issue in two boys hostels.

Due to violence around 40 students could not participate in the postgraduate examination. The sources said the windowpanes of a police vehicle were also smashed in the clash. Cross FIRs have been registered.

ABVP state secretary Ajay Bherta accused the SFI of instigating the clash.  He alleged that SFI activists had first attacked ABVP activists outside the arts block and later they attacked ABVP activists right in front of police.

Students Central Association (SCA) president Puneet Dhanta, however, blamed the ABVP activists for instigating the violence.

Vice-Chancellor  A.D.N Bajpai held meeting with district administration, hostel wardens and others to keep check of violence on the campus.

“Keeping in view the prevailing law and order situation on the campus in general and the Boys’s Hostels in particular, it has been decided to close all the Boys’ Hostels from June 14 for an indefinite period,” he added.

Later the SFI also organised a rally in HPU campus and demanded stern action against the ABVP activists who were responsible for this episode.

The Vice-Chancellor also called upon the students to concentrate on the studies and not to indulge in any sort of slogan raising, stone pelting incidents. He also directed the DSP (campus) to deal with the situation strictly in view of the order passed by the high court.
