Himachal gets Adventure Destination Award in Tourism sector

State of Himachal Pradesh has been conferred the award for best Adventure Destination – 2011 by the prestigious Lonely Planet Magazine. This is the first award from the most prestigious Travel Magazine. It is a tribute to the adventure activities available in the State and the development of the same in right direction as well as the acceptance and repeated visit of tourists for experiencing thrill and joy associated with adventure sports.

Disclosing this Chief Secretary, S. Soy who also holds the charge of Tourism hoped that the adventure tourism in the coming decade would constitute a big chunk of the vast improving and diversifying tourism potential of the state.

Roy said that Himachal had world class River Rafting facilities in the state while paragliding has seen world class Paragliders competing in the Pre World Cups being organized in the state. The Heli-skiing and conventional trekking is also attracting million of tourists every year. The state from this year has accorded permission for heli trekking throughout the state and it is hoped that adventurous activities would further proliferate under rural tourism flagship under “Har Goan Ki Kahani’

He said that State Government had already tied up with various adventure sports bodies including Air force and Indian Army. Of the 1.50 crore tourists visiting the state about 25%  had experienced one or other kind of adventurous activities.

The eco-friendly environment of the State is attracting more and more foreign tourists/locals towards lesser known adventure activities like rowing, canoeing, zorbing and River Crossing by conventional methods. Roy further hoped that adventure tourism in the coming decade would contribute about 25% of the total tourism product in the state.
